Summer Vegie Time!!

The 1st week of September in Melbourne, and the summer vegie selection starts rolling into the nursery. The following list of vegies can be planted right now:

Every year new vegies are introduced to the home gardener. This year is no different. Oasis brand have released a new Tomato called Pink Pearl.

TOMATO PINK PEARL™

Lycopersicon esculentum F1

Tomato Pink Pearl™ produces sweet, juicy cherry-sized fruit that turn from green to pink before maturing to a deep crimson-pink colour. This early maturing tomato produces attractive trusses of fruit with glossy firm skins. Tomato Pink Pearl is proud to support the National Breast Cancer Research Foundation.

  • Growing Tip: Install a 2m stake at the time of planting. Apply a Potassium (K) rich fertiliser once flowers appear for best results.
  • Position: Full sun
  • Height / Spacing: 1.8m plus, 35cm
  • Lifespan: Annual
  • Planting Time: Spring,Summer
  • Harvest: 8-10 weeks approx.

Another new release from Oasis Australia is a purple and white eggplant called Fairy Tale. They have less seeds and a softer skin then most other eggplants.

EGGPLANT FAIRY TALE

Solanum melongena F1

An attractive compact plant te produces pretty mauve flowers followed by clusters of 2-4 violet and white striped fruit. Eggplant Fairy Tale is less bitter than other eggplants and may be harvested when 10-15cm long. the small tender fruit may be grilled or marinated whole. Alternatively, leave the fruit to mature on the plant for longer and add to your favourite cooked dishes. Eggplants are a very good source of dietary fibre, potassium and vitamins B1 and B6.

  • Growing Tip: Avoid overwatering when fruit nears maturity. Apply a Potassium (K) rich fertiliser once fruit appears for best results.
  • Position: Full sun
  • Height / Spacing: 45-60cm, 45-60cm
  • Lifespan: Annual
  • Planting Time: Spring, Summer
  • Harvest: 6-8 weeks after planting if growing from seedlings.
