Beth's Favourite

Beth has a Certificate 3 in Horticulture and lives in Wyndhamvale.

She loves unusual foliage plants like Bromeliads or plants out of the ordinary.

Beth has chosen this plant as a top performer in the Wyndham area. Below are the features that make this plant so special she has her name on it.

Duranta Repens ‘Geisha Girl'

Beth has chosen Duranta Repens ‘Geisha Girl' as her favourite plant this autumn because of its vivid mauve flower sprays and lush, green foliage. ‘Geisha Girl' is a stunning garden shrub and provides growers with an abundance of wisteria-like, vanilla scented flowers from spring through to winter. Fantastic when used as a feature specimen and just as beautiful when used in pots, Geisha Girl is a small growing shrub reaching 2 metres high by 2 metres wide, but can be kept smaller with pruning. Also available in standard form which makes it an ideal change from standard roses. This beautiful shrub deserves a place in every garden and its flower display and tough characteristics makes ‘Geisha Girl' a top performer any time of the year!

What's Flowering In Beth's Garden In Autumn

Abelia Grandiflora (Glossy Abelia)

I have always loved this plant because of it's dense, glossy foliage and masses of white flowers with a pinkish tinge. An evergreen shrub reaching 1.5 to 2 metres tall, with graceful, arching stems and foliage which has a bronze shade in autumn. A tough and beautiful garden shrub that flowers almost all year and is tolerant of a wide range of situations.

Duranta Repens ‘Geisha Girl'

One of my all-time favourites! Duranta ‘Geisha Girl' is a showy, yet tough shrub with masses of bright mauve pendulous flowers occurring most of the year. Every winter I prune mine back by half and by spring it is in all it's glory again. A non-stop performer with a divine vanilla scent, Duranta ‘Geisha Girl' is capable of reaching 2 metres in height, but I keep mine at around 1.2 metres tall.

Felicia amelloides (Blue Margarite)

A fantastic groundcover, that never seems to fail even in the harshest of conditions. It forms a thick mat of glossy green foliage with dainty sky-blue daisy-like flowers sitting above the foliage. I like to use Felicia in dry spots in the garden where most plants tend to struggle. My biggest specimen would be approximately 40cm tall and 70cm wide. Felicia amelloides is a tough little number, but delicate to look at.

Grevillea ‘Superb'

Out of all the Grevillea varieties available, Grevillea ‘Superb' is still at the top of my favourites list. I love the large, showy flowers that have shades of red, salmon pink and tangerine all on the one bud. Grevillea Superb flowers all year which provides an important food source for the native parrots throughout the colder months. Capable of reaching 2 metres in height, but I prune mine back by one third every few months to encourage thick, bushy growth and plenty of flowers.

Gaillardia ‘Fanfare' (Blanket Flower)

Gaillardia ‘Fanfare' was a must for me because of my love for the unusual. When I first saw this I was amazed by the size and shape of the flower (about 8cm) and the vibrant colours. A fast growing, tough and compact plant, growing 40cm high by 50cm wide and flowers throughout the warmer months. Tolerant of many conditions, although best in full-sun, and ideal for garden bed plantings and pots.

Hibiscus syriacus (Rose of Sharon)

My Hibiscus syriacus is very sentimental to me because I remember when my late father planted it almost 18 years ago. Unlike other Hibiscus varieties, this one is deciduous (loses it's leaves) and the flower is small compared to the tropical varieties. The flowers are approximately 7cm wide and appear in masses from spring through to autumn. In late autumn the foliage changes from lush green to a delicate gold as the tree prepares to drop its leaves. A small tree, roughly 4 metres in height and width, the Rose of Sharon makes an excellent feature specimen in any garden.

Plectranthus ‘Mona Lavender'

A beautiful and small compact shrub ideal for those dull, shaded spots in the garden. My ‘Mona Lavender' has never failed to impress myself and others with it's vivid purple flower spikes above it's deep green, glossy foliage with dark a purple under leaf. Growing only 80cm high by 60cm wide and flowering mainly in autumn to winter, Plectranthus ‘Mona Lavender' is sure to be favourite addition to any garden.

Rose Abraham Derby (David Austin)

For me, a rose not only has to look beautiful, but also has to have a fragrance to match its beauty. My David Austin rose Abraham Derby has it all. A strong grower with the most impressive blooms up to 15cm wide and a delicious fruity scent. A prolific bloomer with dense flower heads in soft pink tones with tangerine shades towards the centre of the bloom. A must for every rose lover!

Geranium Spreading Pink

My spreading Geraniums were purchased as seedlings and have now matured to a height of 30cm with a spread of 90cm. I used them as under-plantings for trees and roses and they have performed brilliantly. In the peak of the drought they were in full bloom and showed no effects of the harsh summer. A tough, compact, and fast growing groundcover that flowers practically all year.
